I have a fire fighting booster reel with pump on my 1953 M38A1 and don't have a data plate showing PTO lever positions...was there one? The only on I have seen on-line is for the winch.

This is the only one available and that was originally installed by Willys and/or stocked by the Army.



Seems I recall all the fire fighting jeeps were set-up away from Willys and all fire fighting apparatus equipment plates were supplied by the equipment manufacturer.

Try to google search the PTO manufacture or the fire fighting apparatus manufacturer.

I was assuming the PTO was an integral part of the transfer case and all Jeeps got them.

My unit has a small PTO driven gear pump hanging on the crossmember just ahead of the rear axle with a 1" hose connecting it to the bottom of a 55 gallon water tank that's sitting on the floor between the wheel tubs and the discharge going to a Hanney Booster reel that sits on top of the tank. I haven't found who made the pump yet, but would be surprised if a "real" fire apparatus company had much to do with this set-up. It's on the edge of looking home built. Maybe after it's military life it was given/sold to a fire company or forest service and the tank/pump was added.

The underside of this Jeep is OD and the top side is white (many coats). I'm going to try and see if I can uncover the hood numbers, but not holding out to much hope of being successful.

The BLM, US Forest Service were just a couple of the organizations that used surplus jeeps for fire fighting work and modified them for the task. PTO shift patterns vary with manufacturer of the PTO. Ramsey and Koenig are just 2 of several. The shift plate would have accompanied the PTO. They were not standard equipment at Willys but you could buy the jeep with an optional PTO factory installed. However a military M38 or M38A1 would only have come with a ramsey 105 PTO and that was only on a handful of military jeeps with the Ramsey winch.

No, they were optional. If you review several CJ & M jeep parts manuals you'll see the transfer case is shown under transfer case only and the PTO is shown towards the end of the manual with optional equipment.

My PTO only goes to the rear. I'll take a better look after I get it in the shop to see who made my unit.

The majority of the civilian Ag unit PTO's only went to the rear.


The Spicer 18 and the Ramsey PT2-F are very common Civilian rear only PTO's.

OK, my PTO looks like a Ramsey 50 to me. Single stick, with rear output passing straight through from the transfer case. The strange thing is there is no aux shaft facing forward, it's capped just like the rear side. Makes me wonder if they just left the aux gear and chain out altogether???

Are you confusing the Ramsey model 50 winch with a Ramsey model 105 PTO?

OOPS, rookie mistake, it is the Ramsey Model 105 (as long as that's the same number when itdoesn't have an aux shaft facing forward like yours).

The 105 only came the way my photo shows. Someone has deliberately removed the chain & lower shaft from yours. I assume the shaft hole on the front side of the case has been plugged with something.

I'll have to look closer, at first look the front and rear shaft openings look factory closed or not drilled...

I took a closer look and the front of the PTO case is plugged with a solid piece of round stock. It looks factory.

Do the top shaft bearings in the PTO need the chain to splash oil on them? If the chain is gone I wonder how that's done?

The rear cover is stamper 97 on the aux bearing knob with a cast M up close to the output shaft.
