Fuel Tank Sender Wire

I just pulled an intact and complete fuel sender wire from an M38 yesterday. It measures 57 and 5/8 inches tip to tip.

While we are on this topic, I am looking for a source for the cloth covering protecting this wire where it passes through a metal support brace attached to the side of the body which would be around the driver's left thigh. The protective cloth is dirty gray now but may have been white originally. It was close to 18 inches long.

Thanks for any help.

The cloth covering is called Loom, it is a cloth weave covered in a black tar like substance. It comes in many sizes. most likely the size you need is 3/8" or 1/4".

It is available by the foot from Restoration Specialties...

http://stores.restorationspecialties.com/wire-loom/

This is where I buy mine to do the Vent Lines I make for sale.

Hope this helps...

I hate to continue hi-jacking this thread but can anyone verify the original color of this particular loom? The website referral shows about a half dozen black looms and one white (choke tube loom). The white loom resembles what I "pulled " yesterday in color, texture and size more than any of the black ones.

Thanks for everyone's help,

Trip

Charles, I split this topic so you wouldn't be hi-jacking the original thread and now you just tried to hijack your own thread. I would suggest you edit your last post and make a seperate post addressing Hal's vent line production business.

Midwest Military carries all the sizes of loom in stock.

All the loom on the M-38 is BLACK... The reason yours is White/ Gray is it is over 60 yrs old and has been exposed to lots of weather...

There are pieces of loom on the Electrical, Fuel and Venting systems...

1/4" is correct, but a PITA to pull that wire through with the end on it. I suppose if you ran a stiff wire through to fish it, it would be easier. I bought mine from eBay - and I believe it was Restoration Specialties. I still need to buy some for the fuel and vent lines.

Weed-whip cord works great to fish wires through the conduits. Push the cord through the tubing, tape your wire(s) to the end then pull it back through.

Hi Guys,

I realize you're talking M38 here, but in case anyone is interested in the Loom length for the tank sender in the M38A1.......the ORD says the Loom is 74" and the wire is 99" long. For the M170 those numbers are 68" for the Loom and 96" for the wire. Interestingly the Loom for the A1 has a WO part number, but the Loom for the M170 has a manufacturer's code listed as "PO", for which no definition is given in the list in the front of the ORD. Maybe the Loom for the M170 is of a different construction.....but I don't know.

regards,
bob

In this instance we are dealing with one wire only. If the rubber grommets are pulled off and the connectors are removed, the wire will pull through easily.

Unfortunately the old guy behind the counter at our local NAPA has retired/quit/died/moved to Tahiti/etc, and the young guns now have no clue how to find anything I need anymore. I would think I'd have a 50/50 chance they could find this loom if I brought a piece to show them........so unless I'm headed in that direction it's not worth the trip. Sure is a shame how much business they must be losing nationwide because the help has no hands-on experience with anything they sell.

Back to the subject on hand...........this loom material does seem to be available everywhere. Thanks for the info.

regards,
bob
