52 A1, Transmssion shifts fine in all gears. In third gear, jeep accelerates normally then about 40mph starts to scream and when let off the gas, it really gets noisy. ? Stick of dynamite needed?

I think you need to answer several questions first!

1-Are you sure the noise is from the transmission? Or could it be from the bell housing or from the transfer case?

2-Has the clutch, tranny or transfer been repaired or overhauled recently?

3-Have you checked the oil levels in the tranny and transfer recently?

Clutch, works beautifully. No slip, chatter, bucking or grinding of gears. Test drove with no tub on. Don't believe noise is from transfer case. Front axle disengaged. No recent overhaul on tranny or transfer. All fluids drained and refilled. No leaks. I guess what I'm really asking is: How do I determine what level of rebuild do I start with to ensure I am satisfied in the long run? [/img]

You determine what level is needed by first taking them apart, cleaning them and inspecting the condition of the parts.

My reference to the bell housing and clutch info was to determine the possibility of the input shaft/bearing or flywheel pilot bushing may be the source of your screaming noise.

Usually the noise you describe results from inadequate lubricant, whichresults in high operating temps then a bearing or bushing will seize and squeal.

I have never enjoyed lying on my back on the floor under the jeep pulling and installing 150 lbs of tranny/transfer. So whenever I have any need to remove one I always make sure I make her the best she can be so it will be a long time before I need to get under her again.

Usually the loudest noise is from the intermediate shaft in the transfer case. All T-90's and dana 18's whine. If the end float and shaft of the intermediate gear are loose, lots of noise. I had a CJ3A that made a buzzing irritating noise,. Tried everything to no joy. Then the transmission shop guy noticed my rear drive shaft was not correctly clocked. Even though the u-joints were in line, the ears were not. The shaft with slider must have those two yokes in line, not 90 degrees from one another. Check it. Takes about 3 seconds. Oilly
