My jeep has not been together or run for over 40 years. I'm getting very close to starting it up after a full rebuild. I went to clean out the air cleaner element today and discovered that a mouse had set up shop in there at some point in time. As you can see in the picture I was able to bang out quite a bit of mouse debris. I kept at it till it stopped then rinsed it out with a full can of brake cleaner. My concern is that I doubt I was 100 % successful getting out every bit of that junk. My concern is that I'll be sucking mouse droppings into my intake and motor. So, my question is, can this still be used or is it time for a new one? Thanks, Marty.

I would just get another.

Having the peace of mind knowing that your air filter is clean and good is one less thing to bother you if something goes wrong.

Might take it to a car wash and blow the $&% out of it.

Clean well, dry thoroughly and oil.

That’s what I would do.

If it's an M38A1 then get another is affordable advice.

If it's a M38 then at well over $150 each NOS or used I would consider cutting the cannister open, cleaning it out and weld it shut again.

I am going out on a limb here, if the material is organic (Paper, feces and such); get a 5 gallon bucket and put the air cleaner in it, then cover with Clorox Bleach for a couple of days then wash out with a good rinsing.

I say use this as that is how hunters here in OK, clean deer skulls to hang on the wall. The bleach should not harm the metal in the filter,but eat the organics...

Please use all the proper cautions as this is a suggestion not a proper procedure.

There are a few rather unorthodox methods to try to clean foreign material from an enclosed metal shavings filled filter in which the metal shavings are also oil soaked. Folks have even tried burning the foreign material out then refinishing the housing.

The only guaranteed method is to cut open and manually clean or replace.

There is one more option, convert the air cleaner to use a cartridge type dry air filter.

looked up that part number...not in the M38 ORD 9. little searching comes up as a weasel number. didn't find a cross reference but it looks like an mb-m38 element.

found one for 35.00 on AJP site.

My apologies! Wes has certainly been clear about false advertising in the market we live in, and I didn't do my homework before posting. I'm guessing there's no chance that Uncle Sam made the same filter under two different part numbers? Nah, that's too much to guess about. And I forgot the tendency to shoot the messenger.

I think the vendor posted some additional photos or maybe I missed them first go-around, and at the risk of sticking my neck out again ---- (and without a ruler to measure) it sure looks like it might could maybe be the same element the M38 uses?

It kinda looks like mine anyway. I sure hope I didn't say that out loud...

Maybe I have a Weasel element. Now I have to go look.
