Valve spring replacement

On a L134 is it possible to remove and replace a valve spring without removing the head? I have the proper spring compressor but not sure if there’s enough room to get the new spring in. Found an exhaust spring broken. Probably my issue on low power. Any advice? Thanks

Normally I’d just pull the head but I just did for a different reason. I can see that it won’t be easy if at all possible due to removal of the broken spring.

I have done it on two L134s and one Dodge 230; use just the valve spring compressor for flatheads. The valve might try to move upward so use a screw driver in the retainer slot to bring it back down; it won't be hard to move.
Have to make sure the lifter is down as far as it will go, i.e., turn the engine until the cam lobe is on the flat for your valve. You will think there isn't room for a spring to get in but there is.

Well it is possible...I put the new spring in a vise compressed it secured it on one side with a piece of .410 aircraft safety wire and released. It makes the spring curved and partially compressed. It slid right in then installed the retainers. Got the valve spring compressor in there and after installing the keepers (greased) cut the safety wire and released!

I did have an issue replacing the keepers using the original spring compressor. Not enough room and only 2 fingers. Marine sticky grease was the trick with a inspection mirror. Runs like a Swiss watch now. I’d had issues since I owned it never ran just right had compression timing right ect. The broken valve spring was the culprit. Runs sweet now.

Quit watching the so-called Pro's years ago.

Too many game-playing millionaires whining.

Clemson is where it's at! :D
