a1 steering gear

Post by zeke57 »

Searched through manuals and members photo albums and did not find an answer so I have a question. How much grease should be in the steering gear? I pulled the plug and stuck in a 3'' probe and a little grease barely showed on the tip. Also I was advised to use a product called "cornhead grease" if I need to add any. Thanks all.

This is a topic that comes up very often. A quick search using:
1 - Google - Search for this "What lubricant to use in Ross steering gear boxes"
and you will get this: https://www.google.com/search?biw=1353& ... PpNyXf1pX8

2 - Search our web site for this: "Ross Steering Lubrication" and you'll get this: http://www.willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules. ... highlight=

Bottom line is both the M38 & the M38A1 manuals specify Gear Oil 90 or 75 weight. The two civvy manuals SM-1002 for early flat fenders & SM-1046 for later flat fenders and round fenders both specify gear oil 80 weight.

Folks naturaly look for the easy way so when the gear oil starts leaking due to bushing wear and gasket failures they avoid rebuilding the box and simply ask for something thicker that won't leak so easily.

You can ask for advice here but please analyze it, review the other info sources and make your own well thought out choice.

I gotta put my .02 in here. Corn head grease is not for the steering gear. While it may provide lubricant for the worm shaft and sector interface, it will not grease the outer sector bushing or the upper worm bearings. Corn head grease is a bandaid for a problem that needs more attention than this.
