Just bought my 1st Jeep [M38] and I'm trying to fix the horn. It is/was a dash push button but I want it back in the steering wheel. I removed the switch for multiple reasons. There was no hole for the rod [missing] but rather a seal of some sort and when I poked a 1/8" rod thru I got a bath of GO. The box has been rebuilt and all is tight in the front. How do I get the adapter out because I believe there is no tube thru the box? I don't want to undo the work that was done. Can I remove the side cover and drift it out after removing the box? TM 9-1804B did not address the adapter.

The adapter is pressed into the housing at the bottom.
I’m guessing (ducks!) a civvy repair/ replacement with a button on the dash, etc., may use an adapter that is plugged.

In any case, you may have to remove the box to remove and properly replace the adapter in the housing.

The commonly referred to civvy manual may have info.

Actually it appears none of the manuals offer any real help. There is a rather large choice of manuals by the way:

Oddly the M38A1 uses a different adapter RG PN 402141, WO# 806915 which TM 9-8015-2 M38A1 Running gear says is threaded. The comparison of part numbers between the M38A1 & the M38 will further skew the whole program.

Yep, this is very confusing and I made no typo's, these are straight from the two ORD 9's.

You can interchange the adapters. Yes, Wes is correct in that there were 2 different part numbers, but you can use the later designed adapter in either gear box. We manufacture the later type adapter and have them in stock.

Thank you all for the information. I'm going to try a pipe wrench to see if I can twist the adapter loose, if not then I'll be digging a hole to remove the assembly. And based on the picture from Wes I'll have to disassemble the box to get to the adapter if I need to drift it out from inside the box. Again, thank you all for the quick responses.

Correct, if you can't pull or pry it out, you must disassemble the gear box, separate the tube from the plug and drive the plug out.

Have you at least removed the steering wheel and checked for existence of the original pushrod and mid-tube spacer?

Not as of yet. I just pulled the rubber button off and tried to get a 48" x 1/8" rod down the shaft trying to find the tube using a piece of leather cut into a 5/8" circle as a centering guide. I know the rod is missing and most likely the mid tube spacer once I see a picture of what that is. I will look at/download the Ross Manuals. I've downloaded most of the TMs.
