restoring springs on M38

restoring springs on M38
Does any one have a suggestions on how to restore the springs on a m38. Mine have plenty of surface rust but are solid as far as I can tell. I was thinking of glass beading but will the dust between the springs cause trouble down the road?

Most folks follow the procedure for disasembly and reassembly in the TM 9-1804B. Then blast and paint each leaf seperately.

I know I need to check what books my dad had on this jeep before I start on too much. I know he has at least one or two on jeeps but I am not 100% sure on which model. Most of his stuff was on DUKWs. Fortunately he did fill my head with a lot of knowledge about cars in general. Taking off the springs should not be a big deal with or with out a manual for me. However I will wait till I have the book just to make sure. Better safe than sorry when it comes to safety.

I assumed you knew how to remove the springs. The removal directions are in the operator's manual TM 9-804 or TM 9-8012. But there is a point worth making here as well. Two of the threaded spring shackle bushings are left hand.
The manual I quoted was for the disassembly, inspection and reconditioning and reassembly of the springs themselves. You should review this manual. I would not bead blast as an assembly unless I was doing a scratch and shoot type resto.

Good info on the left hand threads. I think I read about that in another thread. There is a lot of info here and I am trying to soak up as much as I can. It will be at least spring time but most likely some time in the summer till I even think about starting on this project. The restore job planned will be a quality one that I hope will make everyone appreciate the fine machines these are.
