Field parts replacement

Were spare parts held in central store for field use as required? My M38 hood doesn’t seem to have any numbers and I’m wondering if the hood might have been replaced in the field and the numbers not painted on. It all looks proper military, it is 24 volt and has TP25 on the fenders. Might that be possible?

Anything is possible but highly unlikely. Military vehicles got their missing for any reason registration numbers repainted immediately before they went back in service. If you have a truly issue hood with no hood number traces whatsoever then your hood was purchased by a civvy owner as NOS surplus and was then installed on your jeep.

Thx Wes. Disappointing but that’s life I guess. I’ll use the serial number as you have said to others so that it will be obvious it’s not the original number. Should it be 208 or 209? Date is June 1952.

I just read elsewhere that all M38s were primed with semi gloss OD green, is that correct? If so maybe the black primer I found was a respray and the original paint is underneath. I’ll rub through the black and see what I find.

The Army specified the paint process in it's contract for the M38's. Bare metal with two coats of OD 2430. The bottom coat was to be thinned so it would behave better as a primer.
