Warner T90 Transmission M38 gear shift housing removal

According to the TM this is the gear box fitted to my M38.

I have seen a few videos on removing the gear shift control housing, looks straight forward on the M38 with the large removable floor panel.

I would like to look inside as you can see all the gears etc just out of interest.

My question is when you take the housing off the two fork selectors come off at the same time as one unit. I have not seen any information about refitting, does it just drop back in or does it have spring loaded parts which make it difficult. Also do you take the the housing off in a particular gear or neutral?

I did a little re-reading and seems you are correct. The two primary manuals for the task of dissassembly of the tranny do not offer much guidance on the top control cover assembly removal and installation. Making matters worse are the TM 9-1804B Running gear was re-written in June 1952 but the section on top cover removal and installation still refers/defers to the older TM 9-804 M38 early operator's manual. And of course the later TM 9-8012 M38 Operator's manual written Jan 1956 does not complement TM 9-1804B either. It's a wee bit better in the civilian factory manual for the CJ2A/CJ3A SM-1002 in chapter K Tranny-Transfer.

Back to your question: The best way is to put tranny in neutral and remove the top cover with shift lever and forks undisturbed. Mark all relative positions or take photos of the cover assembly and the tranny internals in their undisturbed locations so you can easily rejoin them later.

Thanks Wes I will have a look, it will be one of those jobs done once will be happy to do it again but the first time a bit worrying should something pop out.

Wes is correct, put the transmission in neutral, and remove the cover. The forks will come out as part of the cover assembly.

Just pop the cover off; you will see where the forks were; hard to screw it up. Now, as for what you see inside, sometimes it is like lifting rocks and finding snakes; if you don't want to see any snakes, don't lift the rock.

Oil has arrived. I have removed the cover plate around the housing and there is a slight overlap of the metal work from the larger floor plate on the drivers side.

Do you have to remove the larger floor plate or will the housing angle out of the smaller access panel okay?

All sorted. Undid the large cover but not removed. It slid across just enough to give full clearance all around.
