M38a1 exhaust flex pipe

Post by JayO »

Hello colleagues,
I have a 1970 Canadian Three M38a1 and I am working out some noises from below. My exhaust is stock and in good condition. It surprises me that the exhaust does not have a flex portion and...is not mounted on a rubber hanger. I wonder sometime if I hear a flexing exhaust system. The clamps that secure the system to the frame are currently tight and allow no movement. I thought engines move perpendicular to the length wise frame. Therefore how could exhaust be rigidly attached. I appreciate very much your thoughts. Stay safe. Jay. London Ontario Canada.

I've mounted the exhaust system with rubber hangers on M38A1. Visually, hardly noticeable.

Apparently the Willys engineers believed that the few curves and bends in the pipe would allow adequate flexing for the inch or 2 forward/aft movement of the engine.

Final adjustment of the exhaust system can be done by varying the spacer in the rear muffler clamp so that the system is in a relaxed position. Always consider that settling of old motor mounts or body to frame cushions can put stress on the exhaust system: bad news for manifold outlets.
