WINDSHIELD GLASS STENCIL

Hello,

I am researching the original manufacturer for the correct windshield glass for the M38.

In research, I have found the correct manufacturer for the WILLYS MB / GPW and I want to mark my windshield the same as the original.

If someone can help me with the correct name, model of the marking on the glass, and dimension to make a replica of a stencil engraving my glass with acid, it would be perfect!

Thank you to everyone who can contribute.

Alexandre

Hello Alexandre,

What Brian meant was you are taking your M38 restoration to the next higher level by attempting to properly copy the glass manufacturer's markings to your glass. This info is at present still not published for the M38 & M38A1/M170 glass because the only source would be a copy of the production BOM's or Willys drawings/blueprints.

Raising the bar simply meant you are raising your goals much higher then most M38 restorers.

Hello,

Thanks Brian for the compliment !! I've been struggling for 15 years to restore an M38, and yet details are missing that my research does not help me !!!

But I believe that I am making a dream come true, an M38 with a high standard of restoration is something I always wanted and hope to accomplish soon !!!

Thanks Wes, for clarifying the meaning of Brian's message, I really didn't get it !!!

In research I saw that the manufacturer DUPLATE made glasses for WILLYS MB and some people who had contact with M38 at the time of the 50's, told me that they also left for M38.

Is this information true?
Could anyone with an original windshield still confirm? From your experience, what do you think about it?
Could someone with the DUPLATE model give me pictures and measurements for reproduction?

Thanks to everyone involved!
Alexandre

Mine says:

DUPLATE
XXX 9-51
XXX PLATE

The XXX is not readable.

I came across this that seems to indicate that "DUPLATE" is (was) made by Pittsburgh Paint and Glass (PPG), and perhaps one of the two "XXX" might be "AS1" ?

Hi Eades,

Could you send me a picture of the windshield detail? A photo taken from the front, to view without distortion?

And also the external measure of a rectangle in which the stencil is inscribed?

Appreciate!! I think with this information I can reproduce mine !!

Grateful for the help !!

Ron,

Thanks for the contribution!
In the PDF document you sent, the first part says "AS1" was used on any part of the vehicle except the windshield!

I found a photo on the internet, with "DUPLATE", in the line just below the letters "AS WS 120", and in the third line "SAFETY PLATE".

I'm still in doubt !!

If Eades can contribute an image of its windshield, it would be a good start for research, in addition to the measurements of the print on the glass.

Please help me and keep contributing!

Thank you
Alexandre

Hi Alexandre,
I think that might be a typo (mistake)? The second sentence says the same thing about AS3 (not for windshields). Sometimes it's hard to trust internet information. I always try to find more than one source saying the same thing to gain confidence.

I did more searching and found this (and others) that say AS1 is for windshields:

http://www.carwindshields.info/windshieldmarkings

And I just looked at the windshields of both my cars in the driveway (2003 and 2017) and both have "AS1" on their windshield glass labels.

The windshield on my M38 has no marking at all.

Good luck!

Hi Ron,

Really, I also like to certify the research !!!
Thank you for your cooperation, you helped me to believe even more in my informal research. M38 used DUPLATE.

Now I just need a photo and measurements to reproduce the stencil, so I can engrave my glass !!

If anyone can help me with that it would be great !!

Thanks again!

Here is what is on the windshield of my 1951 M38. I originally thought it was original glass, but not with a '54 date (but pretty close to original date).

And this marking is on the windshield of my 1952 M38A1 (Libbey Owens Ford glass company had a plant in Toledo, Ohio).

Kendall,

Thanks for sharing your photo !! Just as I need it! I can reproduce the stencil from your photo perfectly !!! Thank you.

It looks like your windshields are original.
I still lack a certification for DUPLATE, I insist that this would be the correct one for the M38.

Could anyone make photos and measurements available?

Thank you all!!
The search does not stop!
