Data plate mounting question

What is the correct way to attach the main steel plate that has the data plates mounted on it to the dash? Mine is currently pop riveted, which I doubt is correct.

M38's serial number MC10001 thru MC34151 have each of the small plates screwed to the dash. MC34152 and on have each plate riveted to a large plate and the large plate is screwed to the dash.

Thanks for the fast reply. Having the data plates simply screwed on must make the DMV inspectors real happy.
I assume a slotted screw? Does anyone have a photo showing it attached to the dash to give me an idea of type & approximant head size?

The screws are listed in section 210 of your M38 parts manual. The correct Willys factory screw is :
Screw, tappinf, pan-hd, gimlet-pt, sh-metal-thd, S, cd or zn-pltd, No. 6,(0.138)-18x3/8. (common slotted)
For field use this was superseded by:
Screw, tapping, cross-recess-pan-hd, gimlet-pt, sh-met-thd, S, cd or zn-pltd, No. 6 (0.138)x 3/8.

Wes, what was the purpose of the large round hole in the dash behind the data plate in the MC34152 and after SNs?

For the heater kit duct. If the jeep was an early model without the hole and the data plates were fastened directly to the dash then when the Army installed the heater they had to cut the hole. Once the heater kit was installed the whole set of data plates were then fastened individually to the defroster duct in a neat row.
