New Gas Tank

Hi All,
After trying to repair my original M38 gas tank failed, a string of used tanks also failed to not leak so I'm just gonna buy a new one. Prices seem to vary with some around $350 and others at $450. Im guessing the cheaper ones are the MDJ and the other Omix. Are the MDJ ones comparatively that inferior in quality and fit to the Omix? Its hard to get a definitive answer from the different vendors on who their manufacturing source is. Thanks.

I could be wrong, but thought that MDJ makes them and Omix sells them (Omix doesn't make anything, they sell stuff under their brand name).

Almost nothing ticks me off more than that. They don't advertise who or where it's made, and if you ask you get attitude back. That's shady for sure. Why not say? Makes me want to run away --- very fast.

I always try to buy Made in USA, or NOS, or genuine take-off's --- but it's not always possible with some things. Patience is good.

M38 specific gas tanks aren't cheap that I've seen, but it's worse to pay big bucks for poor fitting or inferior crapola. It's hard to figure out why vendors and makers can't seem to figure out that quality sells and crapola don't. Do they think we're stupid?

Have you talked to Brent Mullins (Jeep Parts) in College Station? If I was an hour's driving distance from him I think I'd call first and then pay a visit.

Either that, or call John at Midwest Military. Both will treat you right. So will several others. It's a select bunch (in my opinion).

M38 Gas Tank

I recently visited and purchased an M38 original take off gas tank from Brent Mullins in College Station Texas. I was allowed to choose my tank from a dozen tanks. The tank was somewhat rusty inside but cleaned up perfect. Being original it had the correct brackets and wire/tube clamps still attached.
It fit perfect. It even still had the sender and pickup filter tube attached which cleaned up perfect.

I have purchased many NOS and original parts from Brent and have always been extremely satisfied with the fit and quality of the items purchased. I am fortunate that I live close enough to Brent and can drive to his location to pick up parts as needed. Brent has always been gracious enough to allow me to look around at his vast inventory of parts (which are not all on his website so call) and I can't say enough kind words for this vendor.

Ok. I was unclear whether some of the tanks have thicker gauge steel than others. I know they make plastic ones now but they are far more expensive.

I actually had planned on paying a visit to Mullins to check out his selection of used tanks but got deployed to McAllen for border duty before I had the chance.

I bought a MDJ M38 tank. Not exact dimensions but doable. The sending unit opening was ok but thread holes needed work. Thickness of sheet metal ok no leaks obviously a usable original tank best but didn’t see any for sale.
