Quick question:
anybody remember where the shorter bolt (1") out of the five bolts holding transmission and transfer together goes?

From Rick Steves’ guide:
“ Caution: In a November 1958 Jeep Service and Parts News, They note that there are 2 different size bolts to hold the T-case to the transmission, 1 & 1 1/8". They warn that improper assembly can lead to gear damage and leaks. They want the two 1" bolts in the lower left and lower right. #* I looked this warning over very carefully and I agree that installing the 1 1/8" bolt in the lower left corner position would damage the reverse idler gear. I was unable to find a reason for the shorter bolt in the lower right hole unless they were concerned about confusion as to which side was which. ”
I have three 1-1/8” and two 1” bolts.

Wow, thanks Brian.
As much as I like to think that I can pay attention to details, the difference between a 1-inch and a 1-1/8 inch bolt could easily be missed.
I'm still searching the manuals to see if this detail is pointed out. If not, I'm sure going to make a note in the margin.
If Willys was concerned about confusion, maybe they could've made all 5 bolts the same 1-inch length and avoid the potential problem altogether?

Still searching, but nothing so far in the M38 manuals that I can find.
My copy of the Willys Service Manual SM-1002-R6 on page 169, paragraph K-9.k. says there's 5 screws, three 1-1/8-inch and two 1-inch.
It's clear about installing the two 1-inch screws in the lower left and lower right mounting holes. Doesn't say why --- just do it.
I'm going to make a margin note and highlight it anyway.
Thanks again!

Well...
That's odd, when I took it apart they're was only 1x 1" bolt and
page 198 of Ord.9 SNL G-740 lists 4x 1-1/8" and 1x 1" bolt...
If i was to choose a location for that 1" bolt, definitely where the idler gear is.
The one next to it is where the cluster gear is, looks like enough room for a 1-1/8" bolt at that location.
Or is it another error in SNL G-740???

Hello Pierre,
Rick in his guide I pasted from asked the same question!
