M170 front spring replacement

Post by JeepDrivingRay »

Anyone know of a source for replacement front springs for an M170? Somewhere in the past someone thought our M170 was the General Lee and tried jumping who knows what and busted a few leafs on both sides . Ps it was also orange at some point.

Orange usually indicates Civil Defense useage. Lot of off road traveling with them.

Okay so more than likely it was shipped from the USMC to the Civil Defense then sold to its civilian owner some time after?

Is there a certain color orange that was used for Civil Defense or did they use anything they could find?

Does anyone know ofany difference between M38A1 springs and M170 springs besides leaf count ? i count nine in the front pak and 11 in the rear, is there a length difference, I saw an old listing on ebay that said they were 36 1/2 center to center is this true?

The answers to your questions are readily found in the M38A1's/M170's ORD 9 SNL G-758 and the M38A1/M170's operator's Handbook TM 9-8014 and it's associated changes. All of this data is available to you free as PDF files on our downloads page.

Differences in springs are shown on pages 290 & 291 of TM 9-8014.

Here's the orange used by the South Dakota Civil Defense folks where I bought my surplus 1954 M38A1 in 1986.

The M170 has a front spring length of 39 1/2, the M38A1 has a spring length of 38 3/8 exactly 1 inch and an 1/8 difference if my math is correct. And I'm also missing a leaf at 9 on both sides minus more for the broken leaves.
