have a 1951 Willys M38 Serial # 12888. On the right side of the tub are these markings in white lettering. I found these today as I was carefully looking for any markings under the yellow paint.
" M/R EVAC-T-ORD11-SHX-SA348_5818
OR M/F EVIL-T-ORD11-SHX-SA348_5818.
I purchased this vehicle from the Auburn Washington School District - whom got it directly from The military. Their title is dated 1970.
It was acquired from Mount Rainer ( FT LEWIS ) Washington.
Can anyone give me some clues or Ideas on what they are referencing?
"M/F" is common military shipping slang, short for "Mark For", usually followed by a unit name or address for delivery of the item. Markings like yours are commonly painted on vehicles being shipped, even today.
"EVAC-T-ORD11-SHX-SA348_5818" looks to me like a contract or document number for "EVACuation" of the item for some purpose (maybe disposal and sale), but I'm just guessing about that. "Evacuation" is more military slang for moving things from one place to another for various reasons.
I don't recognize anything that indicates which Army unit it came from or went to, or a date indicating when it happened (the military sometimes uses Julian dates on shipping documents).
Sorry, not much help.
Good luck!
