Crankcase ventilation valve

Question on the crankcase PVC valve that is between the fording valve and the intake manifold; should this PVC valve rattle a bit when you shake it like the ones you have on your car engine?.....after looking at all the information in the TM manuals and parts listings, internal drawings of the valve seem to show that air will always flow through the valve but it appears there is a small piece inside that moves back and forth to cause a restriction in the air flow. THis appears to happen when the fording valve by the intake manifold is closed and the pressure forces the small piece (for lack of a better word) foward restricting the air flow. Is this correct?

Thanks in advance for your help

Is that drawing a mod pcv valve drawing or the one that was used in the m sieries?

That's an instructional drawing.

Here's the M38/M38A1 unit.

And here it is exploded:

As you can see the spring would keep the piston from rattling when you shake it.

All you need to do on these things is just unscrew the end. Watch how the parts come out. Take a photo or make a drawing so you get the 4 pieces back together in the correct order facing the correct way and clean up the parts.

Thanks Maeseik and Wes. The photos on the manual CD I have are not all that clear but it did kinda look like there was a spring inside. BTW Wes; your photos didnt show for some reason (maybe the same gremlin thats preventing the posting of photos). But I have an idea now of what the inside should look like and will disassemble it tonite and get it cleaned up.

Thanks!!

I dont even have one on mine. Do you need it? Where does it hook to on the engine?

Here is a web page that explains the Willys crankcase ventilation system. The M38 will have an additional fording valve in line. Normally the fording valve will be open and have no effect on the operation of the ventilation system.
