How does cannister-type oil filter work?
I'm just getting ready to paint an old, original oil filter unit to put on my M38A1, but it doesn't seem quite right. I had always thought the oil came in through the side hose port, then seeped through the filter to enter the center pipe and then down to the outlet hose to the timing cover. The one I have doesn't have any holes in the center pipe to let the oil enter/out. The cannister holds water just fine. How is this supposed to work? Thanks.

The early A1 used the Cuno filter and the later units used the military junior.
The Cuno had a stack of very finely spaced plates and a set of wiper blades that rotated thru them to clean them. That was what the "T" handle on top was for. This was disasembled and clean every 6,000 miles.
The military junior used a replaceable element. It operates on an oil flow from the outside going in to the center tube then back to the engine timing cover.
