transfer case fill and quantity?

3 pints sound right? Do you fill it on the side or is that just a check point? Regular tranny fluid ok?

fill it at the side until it flows out, then the level is ok

Needs to be 85 to 90 weight oil... fill till it comes out the upper side port...

When you say tranny fluid I think the pink transmission fluid used in automatics, this is a no no...

Gentlemen: A while back I wrote you regarding my T-90A1 tranny leaking fluid from the weep hole on the bottom of the bell housing on my M-38 after I resently restored it and replaced the front felt seal.

Wes suggested that I use a heavier weight trans fluid (90-124 weight) which I did. My mechanic also suggested adding an oil conditioner called Lucas Oil in with the tranny fluid. The results were amazing, I went from a four inch puddle of tranny oil to a tea spoon of oil now.

Lucas Oil is great stuff I use it my M38 leakage down to zero

Wich product from Lucas Oil do you mean ?

If this products reduces trannyleaks it is always welcome !

I have a little leak at the intermediate shaft, engine side on the transfercase.

And twice a year i check the levels, the T90 is to low and the transfer is always to high, so i put the amount of oil wich was to much in the transfer back in the T90 ( new clean oil of course).

Maeserik: I believe it is called Lucas "Oil Conditioner". It's designed for deisel engines. You can add it to the engine oil or transmission. It comes in a white plactic squeeze bottle. I mixed it into my 90-125 hypoid weight fluid at about 25% by volume and it really did the trick!

While we're talking about it. I was told, after the fact of course, that you are suppose to soak the felt seal in tranny oil before you install it on the front output shaft, is this correct?

Yes, that is the industry standard for any felt seal used to keep dirt out of a bearing area. It is soaked with whatever material the bearing is lubed with. This is especially true of felt seals subject to friction from nearby parts movement.

Wes: Well that explains why the tranny was leaking so much when I initially started driving my jeep. The felt was dry. Now that it is soak in oil it stopped leaking. Thank god it didn't just burn up from the friction of the shaft!

Won't the transfer case seek it's level when the transmission is filled?There are holes in the rear of the T90 case to allow oil to get into the transfercase. That is the way it was in mine.

Actuallly the change to a heavier weight oil slowed your leak. The felt seals were never meant to keep any oil in. Their sole purpose is to keep dirt and dust out. They perform that duty much better if they are lightly oiled. In an application where they are tight on a spinning shaft they will burn up if they are not oiled.
