Hey guys,

I need to pick your brain for a minute. I have completely taken apart my steering box and steering wheel and found a bunch of gunk at the bottom along with some bearings... yikes! I could sure use a complete parts list to rebuild this box along with the steering wheel. I had to ruff with the steering wheel to get it out and this long narrow tubeing seemed to have went up the steering wheel shaft and it broke. I'm not sure what it was but it's no longer part of the jeep. Also if someone could tell me what the correct color for a 54 m38-A1 is that would be great as well. Also to know were i can get a military carb for this jeep as well. And if anyone has ever had luck rebuilding a carb before, i hear its near impossible to make one ever work right. I appreciate yall's time thanks a bunch!

Looks like you skipped item #1 on the restoration checklist.

#1 Obtain the parts and service manuals for the vehicle you intend to restore.

The correct color from the Willys Factory for your 54 M38A1 is 2430 OD. This is no longer produced by anyone. The closest ready made paint is Gillepie's 23070 or AJP's Late WWII OD.

In 1955 the Army switched to a third version of 24087 which is much more browner than 2430 or the second version of 24087. So most MV's when repainted in the field from then on were painted the new 24087.



2430 is on the left. 2nd version of 24087 is on the right.



The rod that runs down the center of your steering mast is the horn switch actuator. All those parts are shown in great detail in the M38A1 parts manual ORD 9 SNL G-758 and the TM 9-8015-2. If you would rather buy a rebuilt unit just call John at http://www.midwestmil.com/

This Carb is simple to rebuild and most problems passed around the locker room are caused by inadequate cleaning, old composition rubber parts in NOS kits, wrong metering rod, wrong springs, lack of use of proper technical pubs, and just plain ignorance.

WesK I appreciate all the help, I did buy the manual on a cd and it was a disaster. Everything was out of order, and out of index. Was very little help. For the most part i have done everything on my own with great success, just with this steering box it appears their is missing parts, just wanted to make sure i got everything and it's done right. I will look into buying copies of the oriniganl manuals like your suggested. Currently my jeep has a dark green OD to it with a red primer? Also i have a hole in the back of my jeep ( see picture ) I think it's for an antenna. Tell me what ya think. Once again thanks guys.

I have that CD set and it works great. Perhaps you haven't learned your way thru the index's yet. Generally for Willys stuff the #1 CD is service and maintenance and the #2 CD is for various parts list.

The round hole with the square outline of dirt and four screw holes is for the trailer light receptacle. The oval shaped outline below that with a top and bottom screw hole is for the reflector. The two larger holes just left of the trailer receptacle ar for the Antenna mount bracket.
