I thought this was pretty cool. Production numbers by year and model. Makes me appreciate how rare my 170 really is.

I have many of these charts on file. I don't publish charts like the one you pointed out because it is way off arithmetically. Look at his production numbers for the M38. He shows 1950=1563, 1951=1563, 1952=22972, 1953=23571 and total=1423. Well the truth is M38's were produced from Sep 1950 thru Jul 1952. The true record is total production was over 62,000.

He shows identical figures for M38A1 production in 1952 and 53. Not quite correct.

If you check other sources for M170 numbers you see several versions. IE
Year Serial Number Range Production
1953 10001 - xxx ppp
1954 xxx - xxx ppp
1955 xxx - 12271 ppp
This shows a total of 2270 built for those three years. The site you posted shows 1953=2, 1954=1722 and 1955=2271.
The serial numbers 1953 thru 1955 do not support 3995 M170's produced.

This exerpt from a Gary Keating article on the M38A1 page also shows different figures.

A total of 4,155 M170 Frontline Ambulances were designed and produced by Kaiser Jeep of Toledo Ohio from the mid-1950's to the early 1960's. In essence, the M170 was a stretched M38A1 with an additional 20 inches added to the wheelbase for a total of 101". These vehicles (M170) were the predecessor of the CJ6 civilian model by approximately two years with production beginning in October 1953 for the M170 and August 1955 for the CJ6.

It's good that we share what we find out there but I want to try to insure that readers understand how much difference of opinions and fact exist.

I only provided the pictures used with the write up on the M170 on the
M38A1 Restoration web site as is noted there. The web site owner Scott S. provided the text. This does not mean I don't agree with it by any means, but it is correct to note that the exact number of M170's produced is rather vague. The numbers do tend to settle around 5000 or so generally, which does allow the M170 to be recognized as a rare varient of the Jeep line.

While on the topic of vague production numbers for the M170, have you heard anything on the special Radio Truck version of the M170 called

I saw one (may be the one pictured but not sure) at a national show several years back on the East coast down south (tobyhanna, Fort Lee maybe. I have some interior pictures somewhere. It exists and the last time I heard it was in the NY/NJ area.
