Location of Spare tire M38/A-1 ???

:?: IAm presently restoring a 1953 M-38/A-1. The spare tire is mounter on the rear, centered on the tailgate. This will not leave clearence for the 5 gal jerry can I plan to attach. Any advice ????

Hey Czar,

I dont think you have an M38A1. If you did theres a palce for the spare tire holder on the right hand side when you are facing the back of the jeep. If I were you I would look around on the here and on the G503 and figure out which jeep you have and then ask for a pic of the back side.

The M38A1 did not come from Willys with a tailgate. It had a solid rear panel across the back with the a special spare tire bracket that placed the tire higher then the the CJ's did. It was on the passenger side of the rear panel. The gas can carrier was on the driver's side of the rear panel.

Thnks for the picks. Data plate does show that it is in fact a M-38/A-1, "Tailgate" was insalled with 4 bolts, did not actually move. I can seefrom the photos that the previous owner rotated the spare tire bracket 90 degrees, which centered the spare tire. Now I can install it properly. Thanks again
