Gen to Reg. cable M170

Does anyone know where to get this cable? Or can it be made somehow?

Very difficult to find but Vintage wiring of Maine should be able to make a suitable sub up for you. It will only have the three wires and two plugs without the heavy shielded conduit.

My cable is ok but the covering of it is brittle and crumbling off. Can the cover be restored or is substitution the only option?

That is a rubber covering that is molded to the cable.
I have not checked into where that could be done. I am sure some company does that kind of stuff, but for one cable, it is more difficult than you would think. They have to make a mold, etc.

That conduit is a woven steel wire with a molded rubber sheath. You can remove one plug, clean all the old rubber of and slide the very large commercial heat shrink over the conduit and shrink it with a heat gun. Then cut a short piece of heat shrink and slide it on and re-install the plug. Then slide the small piece up against the plug backshell and hit it with the heat gun and shrink it. Voila, pretty rubber coating.

I had a cable with a 90deg end on one end of it. I wanted to replace the 90 with a straight connecter but was finding it very difficult to get the rubber grommet out that has the pins in it. I think there is a special tool to push the pins back out which I don't have.

This is one of the pin pushing tools. They come male and female in various sizes. There are several civilian alternate choices out there as well from snap-on for one source.

Thanks for the photos Wes. I had in my mind that the pins may have a barb on them to keep them from coming out of the bushing. According to the pic I don't see any barbs. So looks like it would come apart easy when the nut is taken off. But maybe the flange edge on the pin is holding it in place inside the bushing.
