Fly wheel ring gear?

I'm changing my old 96 tooth ring gear for the correct 124 tooth ring gear so the correct starter will work on my early m38. The 96 tooth gear has beveled teeth but my 124 gear has no bevel to it.

Is the 124 tooth ring gear supposed to have beveled teeth?

I'm concerned because with the motor still out and the starter installed when I move the ring gear just right the starter gear will not in gage unless the ring gear is in the just right spot. This is my first go around with a manualy engaged starter. Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks

Here are all three flywheels together. The 97 tooth flywheel ring gear was very worn in this photo.

thanks

what I was needing to know, is the 124 ring gear supposed to be beveled? because the starter will not engage unless it ligned up just right.

thanks

What I said above is the top two ring gears are as ahown correct and not beveled and the bottom one has severely worn teeth that when new look just like the top two.

Starter pinion engagement is a dynamic event. Parts will move and they will engage. Wear is inevitable and is expected.

I have the motor out and I have hooked it to the batteries to simulate a "starting". I tried pushing the starter lever in several times and when the teeth are exactly aligned, everything works great, but more times than not the teeth don't line up properly and will not engage, even if I push the lever all the way to the end. Is the starter supposed to turn then in that situation, because mine is not.

If you are observing the engagement of the starter then you do not have the bell housing installed and you are not standing on the kick pedal with your foot.

The teeth are not camfered and the starter pinion will only align with the ring gear teeth 50% of time at best. The instant the starter pedal reaches full depressed and closes the switch the starter will start to turn and will instantly slip into the notches. This is the way they have always funtioned.

Yeah, mine doesn't mesh 100% of the time either. The starter will spin but the teeth aren't engaged. Sometimes it takes a few pedal depresses before they engage.

These kick type starters use the Folothru drives and their travel adjustment is critical to proper operation and engagement. Very few shops today are equipped or knowlegable of the set-up tools and requirements.

that is the answer my starter is not spinning when the teeth do NOT line up and the starter lever is fully pressed. Thanks for all the advise I will try to figure out why the starters not making the proper contact in that scenario but does work when the gears line up proper. I've made all the adjustments possible on the out side of the starter with the limit screw and no luck. Is there somthing else I can do??

Thanks

Since those adjustments are not shown in the M38/M38A1 manuals I assume you took a wild guess at how to set them. The data you need to set them correctly is at the top of this page under "Downloads". If you have the early starter that goes with the 124 tooth ring gear you need to fabricate a couple of speicl tools .

Keith,
I posted these pages here full size because I knew the first and second ones are not in the rest of the download and I assumed you would simply copy them from right here. I added the other two just as a ready reference. Just right click on the top two pages above and save them to your computer.

thanks

337 is the end of that type starter's chapter. The next five pages are general specifications charts for all model starter.
