I need advice/guidance on adjusting the float on my M38 (1952) YS carburetor. I have not been able to find any references in my manuals. Please advise. Thanks!

for an M-38, its 1/4". use a drill bit shaft for checking if you don't have a gauge.

OK. So use the drill bit shaft width to set the correct spacing? It sounds super simple. What's the probability of the float lip or needle being worn and needing replacement?

eh, is that a trick ?, one would need to now if condition and running symptoms of the vehicle to assess an opinion. personally, if she's running good as spec'd and no leaks or blowbacks, good vacuum and proper fuel volume and pressure(per manual). why rebuild. but if your taking the top half to check the float. check for setiment in the bowl. also, if you've never rebuilt it and are not sure if it has, chances are a it's due for a rebuild.

sorry, I skimmed your quest. I mis-read, my bad. be careful with the floa and not to move anything other then the lip on the float for adjustment. and yes, the pin has tendency to get worn. but, like I said, if the whole carb is of the vehicle and on a bench, I order a quality rebuild kit Midwest mil ...or AJP . that is, if you can wait a day or two.

I got a basic rebuild kit and had a local mechanic help me out with that. The jeep has a rough idle that varies and my mechanic felt the float needed to be adjusted. I had some time this week and thought I would do it myself but in reading the pdf on the link I noted those other potential issues. Carburetors are not my thing but the float adjustment seems very simple.
The sediment and carbon buildup also seems possible. I'll let the forum know how it works out. Thanks for your help.

So what exactly is the float lip? I've got it pulled apart and am looking at the float. But none of the manuals indicate a float lip so I imagine it's a "common knowledge" nomenclature piece. Is the lip the small flange the is at approx 90 degrees from the float, or is it the arm attached to the float that the pivot pin goes through? Thanks.

Success! Now, I just have to stop an annoying oil leak from one of the oil filter hoses into the oil pan/bottom of the engine...
