M38A1 Engine Cables?

Post by Ryan275 »

I have a 52 m38a1 and just put my carb on. There were 4 cables that needed hooked up. One was the throttle cable, one was the choke, and there are two more I don't know what to do with. I know that one of them is the Fording cable, but I'm not sure how it hooks up? There is also one more loose cable that I have know idea where it goes or what it does? Thanks for any help.

Red is choke and green is throttle

Orange is throttle and green is choke.

These are the only two cables on the carb.

You should have a pair of cables left that are controlled by a single knob and they are for the fording system. The left (long cable) goes to the PCV valve shutoff valve and the right (short cable) goes to the fording shut off valve that is mounted to the air filter to carb crossover pipe.

Here you see the left fording cable connected to the shut off valve in front of the PCV valve.

Here you see a top view where the left cable passes under the left side of the carb.

Here you can see the right short cable is attached to a bracket fastened near the hood hinge and goes to the small shutoff valve on the front side of the air crossover tube.
