Electrical system overcharging

Hi,
On my M38A1 with 24v system the electrical system seems to be overcharging. I checked the voltage at each battery and they measured 27v each! I purchased a military electrical adapter set to make the connections in the PS magazine download that Ryan recently sumitted. In testing the "Generator-Voltage Test" I got a measurement of around 56 volts (it should be around 27-29 volts). I tested three regulators and they all tested too high. (This was before I read the post of polarizing the generator).
With a reading too high it appears to be a regulator problem. Is there a way to adjust them? Or could it be a problem with the generator not properly polarized?

Wes I am glad you are there for us dummies. My civilian multi-tester has readings for two different voltages (AC and DC) and it does make a difference where the dial is set. So with my tester set correctly, my batteries together read 25.6 volts! So my regulator/generator was working fine all along (my battery gage is not though).
