I just helped a buddy install a CJ3B crankshaft, just because he was told that the CJ3B crankshaft would make his jeep run smoother and faster. He went all out and rectified a old 3B shaft and installed all-new matching bearings.
He has a M38 with the F-engine, soooooooo...
Opinions, anyone?
Anyone try this mode before?

I don't think the F head engine uses a different crankshaft in each different model Willys jeep it came in.
I think your friend got kaboozeled. But then runing an M38 with a F head was not always my idea of a lot of on the ballism. If you want to bump up horse power on the M38 why not jump to a Dauntless 225 V6 or the Chevy 90 deg V6 instead of putting up with a non-stock engine that only yields an additional 12 HP if it's running like new.

f in a flattie
Ive seen plenty of F engines in Flat fender jeeps. THey were common swap because of the higher speed and better breathing before the V6 became prevelant.
I have seen one Military M38 that had an F in it and was paint carc with Black numbers over the old 24087 and white numbers, Hung around a base a really long time.
After having been in a v6 jeep and my M38a1, if I were doing more than nicely graded dirt roads Ide take the longer stroke of the F head over the V6.
If your just putting around town then the V6 is optimum.
I do drive an Mv almost every day so I use them mostly as commuter vehicles but I go ghosttowning and prospecting with them so They gotta be top notch to get there and back.
3 years a go I drove my M38 out to Deat Valley from San Diego, in April.
What a long freekin drive, I was so worn out, and My m38 did 53 really nice. We got to kramer JCt. and took the top off, bad Idea, we had to hold our hats on for the whole time, man our arms got tired.
But Ille tell ya, the m38 performed perfectly out there. It was 115 in the shade, it got me to some really remote spots and back home.
Dam good little jeeps, Staked my life on them more than once.
