My jeep has two different type spark plugs .A Champion #XM-17 , MS 35909 and a Champion X-?17 , 909-2 .The second one I'm not too sure what the numbers are The first one is longer with only one nut on it .The second one has two nuts on it .They are both threaded at the top for the spark plug wires . Are these plugs still for sale ? If not how do you put the spark plug wires to a new type plug ?

yes they are, should be autolite 2243 plugs in m38 and 2245 for m38a1 but 2245's will work fine in an m38 I sell brandnew production autolite 2245's for 10.00 each plus 5.60 shipping for up to 8 plugs

The XM17 (MS35909) is a resistor type 18 mm 1/2" reach some of which came with a 7/8" hex and some with a 11/16" hex.

The XMJ17 (MS35909-2) is a resitor type, shielded 5/8" - 24, 14 mm 3/8" reach plug with a 13/16" hex.

Most of these have been discontinued by Champion same as the many other branks of plugs that meet those MS35909 series spec.

The Auto-lite 2243 is correct for the M38 and the 2245 is correct for the M38A1. I have found these for $6.45 each at my local auto-parts stores.

I might point out here that Portrayal Press sells the "Army Vehicle Parts Guide" originally put together in the 80's by Dennis R. Spence. Dennis was a very regular contributor to the Army Times back then and most of the parts reference charts in this book were often submitted by him to Army Times.

6.45 thats cheaper than my wholesale price , id like to know where your getting them as all the other jeep vendors are 8.50-9.75 for the 60 yr old nos ones and theres a difference in 60 year old sparkplugs and current production . The local napa store gets 13.00 each for plugs.

Cheapest I have seen them is about $7.45 each.

On another note while at the weare show someone mentioned that he had adaptors that let him run regular J8's in his m38. Anyone know where to get them? i would love to run a plug I can get locally.

they make military adapters to run civilian sparkplugs , they are however hard to find and expensive when you find them, Kevin Emdee at Star electric did have a few sets im not sure if he has anymore left or not seems like they were around 100-150.00 a set back 6 or 7 years ago.

Doing a little searching on the net I have found them between 7.45 and 8.50 each. I wish I could get them as cheap as Wes can.

Try rockauto.com search by part # . If you buy other parts
at the same time the shipping keeps the price down.

It is quite simple to run convential civvy J8C spark plugs using standard Packard automotive high tension spark plug wires or in fact any 4 cylinder plug wire set with a metal core and long enough leads. You may have to shop around for the larger lead to cap boots. You remove the shielded leads from the cap and insert and seal the auto type leads. Shouldn't cost you more than $20.

I may have to try that. It would be a lot cheaper than running the stock plugs and wires. Any idea what plug wire set may work?

I used to scratch build using selected individual components and Packard 440 wire. You can take your cap and a plug to your store and test fit untill you find the best fit or go the way I did and build your own set from select components and top shelf wire.

This thread got me thinking (dangerous at the best of times) I was at my local NAPA store and gave them the Auto-lite 2243 number and to my surprise I had a new set of four a few minutes later. They were $12.50 a piece but that was CDN and there was no shipping involved so a great deal for me. It just goes to show that sometimes you dont have to go too far afield to find what you need.

Here is another way to get the plugs you need. I bought a new set of spark plugs a few years back. The prices have gone up a bit but aren't as bad as some people were reporting (upwards of $18 each). Here are the links depending on which ones you need/want.
