Whats a good in line fuel filter?

I took my gas tank apart and the original pickup filter wasn't even connected and the bracket that holds it is trashed.

Rather then purchase the parts to replace it I would rather have a decent inline fuel filter installed.

Any recommendations or specifications on what I should look for? Are some of them to restrictive for the fuel pump?

Just how do you plan to extract the fuel from the tank without a pickup tube? If you fabricate a tube to connect to the top cover of the filter opening then be sure it's bootom end is at least 1" off the floor of the tank.

A small inline filter will plug up a lot quicker then the large in tank filter originally installed which , by the way, lasted over half a century.

Use a filter designed for a carbureted engine and install it between the fuel pump and the tank.

The pickup tube is still there. Its the metal bracket that supports the filter that is rusted beyond repair.

I think those filter elements at the bottom of the pick-up tube aren't being made anymore either, some sort of EPA regulation thing I believe. Mine was there, but the element is trash, so I just removed it and have an in-line filter installed just before the fuel cut-off by the frame. I don't know what type it is, as it was there when I bought the jeep, but it doesn't look expensive. Looks like something you could find at Autozone or some similar parts store. It's working, and that's about all I can say. Just make sure to get a metal one.

I just got a replacement filter for my M38 from Midwest. not only is it cleanable but it works good and lasts a long time.

The original in tank elements can be removed, cleaned and re-installed.

New replacement elements

For cleaning

from tm 9-8012 pp 167 item 5

After removing the element wash thoroughly in volatile mineral spirits or dry cleaning solvent. To dry the element apply compressed air from inside the element to the outside.
