I have a spare used distributor that I was thinking about replacing the bushings in.
Was wondering if anyone here has done this. And what is the technique on removing the old bushings.

arbor press with a bushing driver kit, very easy with these tools takes about 5-10 minutes to change bushings (not counting distributor dissassembly)

Well I don't have the new bushings yet. But looking at the bushings in the distributor housing, the bottom one appears to be smaller in OD than the upper one. Is that so?
I'll wait for a reply on this before I ask any more questions.

They should both be 1/2" ID, 5/8" OD and 1" long.

On the Model IAU-4006UT housing that I have, the bottom bushing measures 5/8" OD and the top one measures 3/4" OD. And it was concerning me on how to remove them. Since they are different diameters. It looks like the bottom one should be driven out toward the upper end while pushing the top bushing out at the same time.

I better order the bushings first I suppose before I do anything else with it. I took some photos, but it is difficult to show the difference in them.

All of mine are the same as Wes mentioned, I have rebuilt ALOT of them

Your distributor may have had a spun the top and was oversized for a new bushing at some time.

I have inspected this thing more closly with a small flash light and I see a bronze washer on top of the upper bushing which is what I measured to be 3/4" OD and about 1/8" thick. What the heck now? Is that normal?

I got the bushings out. Wasn't as difficult as I thought. And I have determinined that the 1/8" width washer is actually an oil seal which is 3/4"OD, on the upper bushing. Ordered some more bushings. Guess I'll have to reuse the old seal since it is still intact.

Ok I got new bushings installed now. However they are a shade tight and my smallest bushing reamer doesn't adjust smaller than 11/16". Anyone have a recommendation on how to proceed without a reamer? Maybe have to look to purshase one single reamer, but hate to do that for a one time thing. Maybe look for a machine shop close by.

For a truly professional and long lasting job you will need the machinist to mic the shaft and ream to the correct clearance instead of to a standard size. So yes the beat choice here is to go to the machine shop.

Has anyone a source for the replacement shaft seals and "advance" weight springs? none of the vendors seem to carry them. thanks

Seams like a sticky (with pictures) on how to rebuild the Jeep distributor would be useful.

The entire distributor overhaul manual is already loaded on this web site. No need for a second set of instructions in a sticky.
