....back to my problem with the sliding yoke on the front propeller shaft. I just noticed that the new sliding yoke I bought to replace my older, shorter sliding yoke has a spot on the inside (where the grease zerk screws in) that does not have a groove cut for a male spline. Naturally, my existing front propeller shaft does not have one of these wider grooves.
Now my question is......did somebody see me coming and laugh all the way to the bank.....or would it be possible to grind off one of the spiles on the propeller shaft to accommodate this wider spline? Do the earlier or later front propeller shafts have this wider groove to fit this type of sliding yoke? Thanks.

After all the repro crap I've bought, send it back and tell them if they want to sell this stuff find something to sell their customers that fits and makes them happy. Stop these people from making a living selling junk! MD Juan comes to my mind first. That's another story. I now look for original or NOS stuff because of your experience here! John
The part was listed as a "replacement" part and the web site clearly states that the seller makes no representation that the parts classified as RPL are 100% complete or accurate........but then, hey.......is it really worth almost $70.00 to find out? Fortunately this "mismatch" is a minor thing and the guy at my machine shop has assured me he can machine away one spline on the propeller shaft and all will be right with the world.....for a price. I just wish I had been told about the need to modify the shaft before I got it all installed or it became a hangup for moving on to bigger and better things. And at $70.00 you'd think the part would have included the screw collar, seal, and split washer (especially to make up for the inaccuracy of the part).....but noooooo. Oh well.....live and learn.......at least externally I'm going to have the right length sliding yoke when its all said and done. I just pity the next guy who finds my "modification" and calls me a bubba!!!!
Look closely at your drive shafts phasing of the "U" joints and mark which spline you want machined off so the phasing stays correct. Otherwise you'll get a vibration you won't like.
You should post this quality and correctness issue on our board for that purpose and list the vendor so we know where not to buy the junk!
Well....little rabbits phoo phoo.......now I really feel stupid. I read what Mr. K said about making sure I "phased" the U joints properly.....and decided I had better read up on that since I wasn't sure just exactly how they were to be phased.....and guess what.......TM9-8015-2, dated August 1954; Chapter 7; Section II; Para. 144; sub-para c; on page 150.....and I quote....."Aline the wide internal spline in the slip yoke with the wide area (missing external spline) on the propeller shaft and push the shaft into the slip yoke." The #@$%@ thing is supposed to have a wide spot......its not my RPL slip yoke that's wrong.....its my propeller shaft! Its probably an M38.......or a very early M38A1....while my slip yoke is definitely M38A1 thru and thru. Guess the phasng thing was something the manufacturer decided was better not left to chance!!
