M38 hood star positioning?

Post by vetteguy66 »

I have a M38 delivery date 9/51. What was the the hood star positioning? Was the top of the star towards the windshield or the grille?

Dana,

My M38 delivery date is 8/51 and it had the original army markings on it when I purchased it way back in 1976. The top of the star points to the grill.

Stars are a "Discretion of the theater commander item" and were not always installed in the field. They did not come from Willys with them.

The AR850-5 and the TB 746-93-1 cover the correct placement of the star, size and etc. WWII was towards the windshield and 50's on up towards the front.

Size was the largest that would fit and be visible with the windshield folded down.

Stars on jeeps

Post by ltsaile »

I was in Korean war '53 - our jeeps stars pointed to windshield.
On my m38 I like it pointing where I'm going, that is normally forward.
As WESK says it was up to the commander or what he inherited when he took over. See my jeep in the photo gallery- ltsaile

The reason all those Korean War jeep stars pointed backwards is because they were all on WWII jeeps!
