Timing cover gasket set

Post by 53a1 »

I got this set from NAPA

Do I need the cork gasket if I have a full pan gasket? I'm thinking it's only used if you change the timing cover w/o removing oil pan.

I'm not sure what the rope seal is for. Is that the rear seal? If it is I'm a little nervous pulling the rear bearing off.

Thanks.

You are correct. That short pan piece is not needed when the pan is already off.

Thanks again Wes. What about the rope? I'll read up on it if you think it is for the rear seal.

I don't think they would put a piece of rope seal in a timing cover gasket set for use on the rear main. Perhaps they intended you to use small sections of it to help with sealing the cut ends of the pan gasket if you hadn't had the pan off and had to splice in the cork piece. What do those instructions have to say?

Thanks Wes.

They don't talk much in detail. They just say to use some sealer here and there. I guess I'll just use the timing cover seal and pulley seal and call it a day.

I would querry the kit provider for the purpose of the rope seal.
