Speedometer cable

Where the speedometer cable screws onto the transfer case....is there supposed to be any type of waterproof seal like a rubber washer, leather gasket, or rubber o-ring between the fitting in the transfer case and the steel bushing in the end of the cable? Oh yeah....on an m38a-1. Thanks.
