Hi, i think i'm having an issue with my transfer case. jeep grinds and shakes in 2w and 4w Hi but not in 4low...how do i eliminate everything else in the driveline and nail it to the transfer case....any ideas what can cause this...............................Frank

put it up on jacks or blocks see if it does it then..

I would start with the universal joints !!

It looks like you need to open the transfer case up and inspect the gears.

The fact that the problem only occurs in two of three gear selections within the transfer would clearly isolate the trouble to the transfer. For example a tranny that works fine in 2nd and 3rd but shakes like the dickens in 1st and 2nd would clearly be a tranny issue.

Had the vibration only occurred in the two 4WD modes then we could suspect a drive shaft but with one 4wd mode smooth and one 4wd mode vibrating that rules out external driveline issues.

Well first off jack one side of the jeep up so both a front and rear tire are off the ground. Put the tranny in neutral and select 4 hi and spin a free wheel and listen for a closer ID of the noise source. Then try 4 Lo and check for the same then 2 Hi and check again.

Once you confirm the noise source as the transfer and you determine it is internal you can pull the rear cover and try to see the culprit. If you can't see what is broken, loose or worn then you'll need to remove the transfer case.

Just to make sure we haven't missed something simple be sure to eliminate loose case bolts, parking brake issues and shifter problems.

I would check your rear driveshaft. Sometimes low gears will mask problems. My guess is that your driveshaft was put together where the splines slide together incorrectly. The yokes on each end of the driveshaft should line up the same. If you have them the opposite or you could say 90 degrees off then it will shake you out of your Jeep!
