Ignition Filter

What is the purpose of the cable and filter connected to the distributor and firewall on an early M38? Is it for military radios or other vehicle-powered electrical equipment? Is it still needed or desired if there is none of this equipment being used?

It was a radio noise filter (Capacitor). The later M38's moved the radio filter inside the distributor. It is the capacitor built into the connector adapter nipple. Most modern radios will do just fine without. The plugs are resistor type and their leads are shielded which just about eliminates any radio noise. The generator is protected from radio noise by a noise filter (capacitor) built into the regulator.
