Paint that can withstand welding?

John at Midwest was telling me that there is a paint available from FLAPS that can tolerate welding. I want to paint the inside of my hat channels before I spot weld them on.

Anyone know that name of this paint?

If I am following your question correctly I think you are asking about weldable primers that have anti-corrosion properties.

Here are two brands. Sem and U-POL.

Sem @ www.semproducts.com What you want is under Automotive, Specialty Products, Primers, Weldable Primers listings.

U-pol @ www.u-pol.com [url] Look for Weld #2 in their pdf. catalog or search for U-pol #2.

For anyone welding through paint I would recommend a cartridge respirator to protect yourself from the welding fumes even if only a little welding will be done. The paper filter masks will not protect you adequately.

These paints should be available from any professional autobody paint supplier and commercial/industrial Sherwin-Williams paint shops sometimes carry SEM products.

U-POL packages their aerosol paints in specially designed cans that are like the Rolls-Royce of spray cans. Some of the best refinishing products out there and affordable.

Just a update on a test I did.

I coated a piece of sheet metal with Rustolium high temp 2000 degree primer. I ran a bead from bare metal and over the paint and it only burned off at the bead. The rest of the paint was still solid. I rubbed with scotch bright and it didn't peel or flake. I'm going to top coat it with the same brand.

I'm painting the inside of my hat channels and sheet metal on tub before I spot weld them on.
