difference between M38 and M38A1 starter

Hello,
how can identify which starter is??number of teeth or something else?

the late style m38 and all m38a1 starters is the same, the early m38 starter is different. if the starter has a nose cone it is the late type starter if it takes a bushing in the bell housing it is the early type. Im sure Wes has pics of both if he'll post them.

Both starters also use the 9 tooth pinion gear.

Top is late M38 and all M38A1 MCZ4001UT (Delco made X10483 starter for this same application.
Bottom is early M38 MBP4301UT
Note: Pinion gear diameters are not the same. They must be matched to their correct flywheel ring gear.
