Please help with connecting my oil filter assembly hoses
My m38 has no oil filter. That's the way I bought it. Since I am wanting to use it on lands in west and south Texas I figured I need to install one. I have acquired one of those orange assemblies and the mounting bracket. I also have a couple of new hoses. I have a TM manual showing the outlet going to the timing gear cover assembly, but I can't figure out, or find in pictures, where the incoming oil would be coming from. Would someone please tell me where the inlet hose connects to? Should there be an oil pump somewhere? I don't seem to have one. My mechanical experience/know-how with willys vehicles is fairly limited, but I think with a picture or detailed explanation I can get this sucker hooked up. If this has been convered before a link to that post would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you look just to the left of the fuel pump (looking at the motor from the driver's side) there is a small plug about the level of the fuel pump. That will need to be pulled and a 1/4" pipe to inverted flare elbow will need to be installed there. That is where the oil filter inlet line is supposed to go...
The plug may be hex head and screw out or punch type... To pull the punch type plug I would drill it with a small bit and screw a larger screw into it then pull the plug out with the screw... like pulling a nail...
If someone knows of a better way et's hear it...
Be careful not to go in too far with the bit as this is the oil channel and it is not real deap.
BTW the oil pump should be the larger assembly onthe side of the motor in the middle of the block...
Hope this helps...

You don't say what engine you have in your Jeep but I will assume it is the L134. The oil filter (either the Cuno filter or the Military Junior) supply line connects to a fitting in the block near the front plate just below the fuel pump. Its hard to see but there shoud be a plug installed there if you don't have a oil line connected. Just to the rear of the fuel pump will be the oil pump sticking out of the block. The oil pump and distributor are connected together inside the block and driven together. Read through your manuals and you will find pics of the oil system. If you don't have copies of the right manuals, they can be found in the "Downloads" section of this website.

You will need one of these fittings...

I think 2432x4 which should be 1/4" pipe thread to 1/4" inverted flare for the oil line...
Hope this helps...

If you read the parts manual ORD 9 SNl G-740 page 46 under the oil lines they list the elbows and adapters needed for the Cuno type filter. The lines are 1/4" tube inverted flare and will need to transition from inverted flare to 1/8" pipe threads. Problem here is the production M38's came with the Cuno type filter so the fittings and hoses listed are correct for the Cuno only. If you go to the M38A1 ORD 9 SNL G-758 pages 52 & 53 you'll see that early M38A1 came with Cuno and Late with Military Junior Fram filter. Those hoses will work and are just a tad long for the M38 with the Fram filter.

The special adapter is welded in the cover.

Oil pump is in middle of yellow line.
You need a slightly different set of fittings to use with the Fram or Military Junior type filter you are using. A lot depends on who built your hoses. Test mount all od it and see which hose fits where and then select the needed fittings based on the threaded end of the hose that attaches to each port. Some hoses have a 1/8" pipe thread on one end while others have 1/4" tube inverted flare on both ends.
