Post by Balvar24 »

I uploaded photos of my serial numbers. I thought I had a 63 model until I stripped the 15 layers of paint off the patent plate on the body. Can someone help me figure out what I have? Thanks guys.

The first step to figuring out what you have is for you to complete our M38A1 survey form and email it to me.

When you start the survey form you will note is is very detailed and this level of detail is necessary to arrive at an intelligent conclusion.

What has happened to you is very common. Tubs get swapped and the person doing the work isn't aware of the patent plate behind the passenger seat and you end up in your situation. A lot od times an builder has two M38A1's in his yard and he just takes the best of the two jeep's parts and makes one.

You will need a few more detailed photos to get a more accurate idea what you have as well. From what you have posted it appears a Nov 1953 tub serial MD66164 was installed on an Oct 63 frame. But this is not a very well informed conclusion. We need a lot more information. Even though the front fenders are post MD73455 we still have not confirmed the date of the frame and the engine is about correct for a Nov 1953 A1 as is the air cleaner.

I'll email you a survey form.

Got it. Yeah, it's detailed. May take a couple off days and a tank of degreaser to get it all sorted out. I think we're going to determine the dash plate is wrong. Thanks. I'll get to work.

To the Administrator: our Aviation Museum was donated as of last week a M38 which I am trying to research to find out more about for our information plaque. We will begin in the future some type of restoration. Several of us have vintage jeeps and have done this, we are beginning the process of verifying and matching the serial number and data plates, the patent plate is OK, and we have it, dash plate has been removed, we will look for the engine plate. Question: Could you please email me the survey form mentioned in this post so that we can have a process to follow to verify the information to the best of our ability? Thank you.
