I have a 52 M38A1 body that needs some major work. Almost all the panels need to get changed out. Thank god my friends are welders that want to help and who I can pay in coffee. I went yesterday to get three 18 gauge steel sheets and brought them home.

The question is: Did I get the right size, because as I look at the new stuff compaired to the old body, I think I should have gotten 16 gauge instead.

Any comments?

Original bodies were 16 ga steel, however most all replacement panels are 18 ga...

Go with the 18 ga and they will last longer...

You got it backwards. The steel gets thicker as the numbers get smaller. 16 gage is thicker than 18 gauge.

16 gauge is all you need. 14 will be a lot harder to work with if doing any forming.
