Turn signal flasher unit (part 11611613631)
Flasher unit for turn signals. I have "blown" two turn signal flasher units. The first one I thought was faulty but the second one (new - 24 volt) blew out after leaving the turn signal on for a short while so I presume that I have a short somewhere. Any suggestions as to the most likely spot or spots to check or just follow all of the relevent wires to see if one is bared and touching the body somewhere. I had installed the signals with a military turn signal switch and flasher unit and they worked for over a year or so without any problems - that is until now and these flasher units cost around $50. Thanks.

Make sure all your grounds are as good as if your life depended on them.Start from the body, steering column, flasher switch, flasher ground etc. These are electronic devicecs and can be very sensitive. Then check for shorts at any wire that you might have moved. The wire can short out to connector housings. It's the little things that will get ya!
Good Luck

If you have an ohm meter check for grounds that way. Disconnect the lights at the light and disconnect the battery. Check each output to see which one is grounded and if it is is it suppose to be (look at the wiring diagram). you can check for correct wiring the same way by grounding the light end (positive ) and ohming from the other end of the wire to where it should connect and see if it is correct; also with battery disconnected. Keep checking until you find it. If you don't find anything get someone who is good at wiring to check the same. I wouldn't put in another until I found the issue.

I installed the solid state flasher also. I believe you must ground the flasher box too. I don't have the wiring diagram at the computer so I'm going from memory.
I've been trying to find the photo that I saw on the web recently where a fella mounted the front turn signals under the fender and used the hood latch bolt to secure it.
Has anyone seen it? I want to know what light fixture he used. I would like to do the same so I can leave the marker light as original.

When you troubleshoot lights start by removing all the lamps.
1-Check with an ohm meter for good grounds from the negative contact in each lamp socket to the chassis. Any grounds that are not 0.0 resistance must be fixed.
2-Disconnect all three cannon plugs for the lights. (main light switch, turn signal lever & flasher)
3-Using an ohm meter again check for any grounding of power wires by connecting the ohm meter to each lamp socket's positive contact and the other lead to the chassis. Any grounded indication must be fixed.
