This weekend while looking for numbers for the M38A1 Survey, I ran across a metal plate on the lower left side of the engine crankcase. The plate is about 3x4 inches and had my engine number that appears below the pump, stamped on the top edge (MD63704), and below that in larger letters, FT ORD 83166. Any ideas what this plate is for and what the second line of numbers and letters represent? I don't believe I have heard of this plate mentioned before.

It's an ordnance depot overhaul plate. There should be all over and under sizes listed there as well.

Thanks Wes. And that may be what mine is but it does not look like the picture. It's a plain plate and no other numbers were on it. The plate was only attached by rivets at two corners diagonally. Any idea what the Ft Ord number means? Is it a tracking number?

The number could be a work order number. If it has no reference to Ordnance Depot and no dates or sizes it may simply be a Ft Ord, property tag.
