Installing E-Brake assembly on M38

Bubba removed my emergency brake drum assembly. I have purchased the complete Brake drum assembly, cable, yoke and bearing cap casting, and correct propeller drive shaft. Which will be the least labor intensive way to install these parts - By removing the transfer case and working on a bench, or working underneath the jeep? Would it be best to remove the transfer case and transmission together, or just the transfer case. I don't hate Bubba. He has many jeeps we can rescue.

The parking brake assembly is pretty much a bolt on item. I would think working under the jeep would be a lot easier than taking the transmission out to work on just the parking brake. The skid plate and floor plates can be removed to improve access. I just am finishing my M38 overhaul and the engine-transmission combo went back in fairly easily but I'm glad I put the engine and transmission back together on the benchtop!

i gotta agree w/skyjeep-the most difficult thing if you pull the tranny
is putting it back in and aligning the input shaft with the pilot bearing
all while laying underneath the jeep. (i dont like laying on my back
wrestling heavy stuff).
i'm in agreement with you on 1 thing and
that is that bubba does make life interesting

I would not offer a suggested means to your end without knowing more about you and your jeep.
1-Do you have a hoist or will you be lying on your back?
2-Have you driven the jeep enough to determine the overall condition the transfer case and the tranny? Excessive gear whine, jumping out of second and hard shifting all dictate that this is the time to address all issues.
3-Are either of them leaking? This includes finding tranny gear oil inside the bellhousing.
Removing the transfer only from under the jeep is not that difficult. But as mentioned above unless you are under age 25 time spent under a jeep on your back is Not Quality Time

If you choose to remove the transfer while the transmission is still in the jeep .....BIG WARNING!!!! you need to secure the main gear assembly in the trany before removing transfer or you'll be fishing all the roller bearings from bottom of transmission... THeres a good website that goes over this, just can't find it at the moment.
