Early M38 starter question

Is there a way to adjust the contact depth of the switch on the early M38 starters? I checked the manuals and can't come up with anything. The starter in question is spinning before the bendix is engaged so it grinds slightly.
Thanks,
Starter.

Greetings...prior to attempting to make possible adjustments, I would make sure there isn't excessive wear on the starter shift lever, starter shift lever being bent, (the tab that presses against the rod of the starter switch assembly). Also, see if the pinion gear isn't worn.

Make sure you have it mounted correctly to the floor. It fits both above and below the floor but will only work correctly

Thanks for the ideas. It seems like the bendix engages far enough into the ring gear. The grinding is only for a second each time, then it cranks ok. I think the starter is spinning too soon. The electrical contact is made too far before the teeth are engaged causing a slight grind as the teeth engage. It is not like the usual worn out ring gear type grinding.
Thanks,
