CJV-35 vs. M38 Air Cleaners

I bought a really nice used air cleaner for my '51 M38. No problem with the air cleaner except it's possible origins.

The owner says it came from a 1949 military jeep he had once owned. The only vehicles I can think of are the CJ-V35 and an early M38 as being close.

Maybe his memory is fuzzy. Is there any difference between the CJV-35 and M38 air cleaners? It appears to be an M38 air cleaner. But I have never seen a CJV-35 air cleaner...

Here are a few examples of the CJV35 air cleaner from Bob W's web site:

Here's a few ID vent system photos from Bob's page as well:

Thanks Wes! Those pictures are great! It looks like it could be a CJ-V35 air cleaner or early M38. The ventilation connections look correct. It is a Hoissdale?-Hershey air cleaner. It needs cleaned up. It was sitting on a shelf in his barn for over 30 years.

Early and late M38 used the same air cleaner. There was only a variation in the vent system plumbing.

Thanks Wes for that clarification...I really appreciate the pictures. I got to look at the air cleaner again and it is definitely an M38 air cleaner. It has the three vent line openings on the back. The large L shaped brass fitting with the double vent lines gave it away on a second look.

First time my M38 will have had a correct air cleaner in probably 20-30 years. The former owners relative was a Humvee mechanic for a rebuild facility and the M38 has been sporting parts of a military Humvee air cleaner for years. It was a novel solution that was pure military ingenuity.

I hope to get the ventilation system hooked up again as it appears to be mostly intact.

I got a good deal on it too!

Hi Rick: I wish I had taken a picture of the engine compartment when I first found it. After I bought it but before it was picked up the seller took off the homemade fuel sytem and the air cleaner set up. All I got with it was the Humvee precleaner.

Once I get the new/old air cleaner hooked up I plan on putting the Humvee precleaner on the snorkel tube for local dirt road driving till the vehicle gets restored one day.
