Hello - does a hood number of 1A8344 on a M170 mean anything?

The Army maintained it's fleets of MV's using a registration number system. These numbers are displayed on the vehicle. Their MV's maintenance records are organized by registration number as well. This number is assigned to the MV at time of it's delivery to the Army and the number stays with the MV until it is declared surplus to the Army's needs or is stricken from the record due to loss or destruction.

Are the MV records still available to learn where this vehicle was in service?

No, They are destroyed when the vehicle is surplused out or written off.

Only Armor vehicles and VIP vehicles will normally have service record cards maintained after they are retired.
