Gearbox/Transfer box Oil draining

Post by Nic »

Hi Guys

Am I right in thinking that the transfer box and gearbox (M38A1) share the same oil resevoir. I have just drained the transfer box then removed the plug on the side of the gearbox and nothing came out. Gearbox is free of chassis so I tipped toward side drain but still nothing came out.

I thought I read that the boxes share a common oil resevoir, just want to be sure before I send of for inspection and re-build?

Many thanks

Nic

They do not have common oil reservoir, but there is a problem known as oil migration between t/c and gearbox. Drained the oil from two jeeps yesterday, one had normal oil level in both if slightly low, but the other jeep had a low level in gearbox and higher in the transfer case. There are special bearings available to stop this problem.

I thought I had read that the lube is common between the two boxes. I believe there is a 1/2" hole to the side of the bearing that the lube can migrate. I think it is meant to be that way.

If it were meant to be! it would only have one fill plug on the tranny.

It is not meant to be. A slight co-mingling of oil between the two is acceptable but their levels must be maintainable individually in each gear box.

Ya Wes, as I stated, "I think". I had to give myself a way out of that statement. :D.
